a weird morning !

I missed a subway stop because I was engrossed in a book ( which hardly happens ) . I thought I will walk to work from where I got off rather than take another train back to my stop, Its only a few blocks, since its a saturday morning, the streets were almost empty, compared to a typical New York city’s morning. I was early to work and was walking very slow, There was this awesome smell of food from restaurants on my way, which made me wish there was a small tea shop which sold Thattu dosa and chammanthi, and an Omlette would make my day. the thought of drinking a chai ( which I have not had in almost two years now, I drink very strong coffee twice a day, I am a New Yorker !! ) I started Imagining the smell of smoke from the dosa, In India my mom still cook rice using firewood which adds a special smoke smell to the rice. Yum !!
A ” hai, good morning ” woke me up from my wonderful day dream, to reality, it was one of my friends, we were both in the middle of the street crossing, from either sides. it took me a while to recognize her, in her winter jacket. She is originally from vietnam and her granddaughters name is Kerala. Named after our Kerala state , the only place where I can get my thattu dosa and the smokey chai.
There is this small park on my way, I can go around or walk through. decided to walk through the park , it was very quiet and beautiful, Looking around , watching the trees , all of a sudden I said rather loudly ” krishna, gurvayoorappa ” . I was like what ? Did i just said what i said ? I hardly remember our ( Indian ) deities or devathas. I hardly pray to any particular ” god “, Since I am not a ” believer “. thinking about this, Just remembered I have only gone to Guruvayoor temple once, with my friend George ! many years back, during my school days. he kept on telling me that if some one finds out that he is a Christian, its going to be a problem. Truthfully I didnt know back then what he was talking about !! . how ever we entered the temple and had a wonderful time there. back from my memory , I was thinking why did I even remembered Krishna ! No I want to go back to my Dosa thoughts, I want to think about Puttu and kadala and Appam and Ishtu, want to day dream about eating Puttu , payar and pappadam, I want to smell rasa vada. why would krishna come in between. huh !
Wait a second. why shouldn’t he, the one as an infant ate sand while crawling and when his mom questioned opened his mouth and showed her the whole universe in his little mouth. isnt he the one who, as a kid stole butter from neighborhood houses and shared it with his friends, the one who threw stones to break pots filled with buttermilk, which was carried on gopis head and drank the buttermilk, isnt he the one who appeased the hunger of rather infamous saint Durvasavu with just a piece of ” cheera ila “. isnt he the one who ate ” avil ” which Kuchela brought for his dear friend.
I reached office and my phone made a little ” ting ” and it was a facebook notification. Today is Geetha Jayanthi and Guruvayoor ekadasi.
Thank you Krishna !! for Bhagavad geetha, for all your childhood pranks, and the adventures that you went, for fighting for protecting women, for all your friendships, for all the relationships you had and love for your nation.
Above all for loving food.
